Denys Nevkryty, artist, restorer, writer, was born on June 16, 1895 in the village of Matviyivka in the Poltava region. In 1916\u20131919 he studied at the Philological Faculty of the Imperial University of St. Volodymyr (Kyiv). In 1919 he graduated from the Kyiv Art School, where his teachers were Fotii Krasytskyi, Hryhorii Dyadchenko, Volodymyr Menk, Ivan Seleznyov, Fedir Krychevskyi.<\/p>\n
While still at school, Denys Nevkryty became interested in Ukrainian theater, attended drama school, where he met the famous actress Maria Starytska, writer Oksana Steshenko, and other figures of Ukrainian culture.<\/p>\n
In the 1920s he joined the writers’ organization “Plough”, wrote the stories “The Obedient One” and “Bread”, and short stories. But when his friends began to disappear one by one in Stalin’s camps, his wife persuaded him to focus on other facets of his talent. In 1938\u20131941, the artist worked in Kyiv at the Central Research and Restoration Museum Workshops.<\/p>\n
Denis Nevkryty brought back to life the canvases of famous masters \u2013 Ivan Aivazovsky, Dmitry Levitsky, Kyriakos Kostandi, Konstantin Trutovsky, Ivan Shishkin and many other artists. During the German-Soviet war, he was in the active army and was able to return to his beloved work only in August 1945.<\/p>\n
The artist restored oil paintings in the Dresden Picture Gallery, and also restored the murals of St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral and St. Andrew’s Church.<\/p>\n
The artist died on February 15, 1970 in Kyiv.<\/p>\n
