Literary Memorial Museum of I.S. Nechuy-Levytskiy
The Nechuy-Levytskiy Literary Memorial Museum was established on a voluntary basis in the settlement of Stebliv in 1960. It was located in the premises of the machine-tractor station, since 1965 – in the House of Culture. Since 1969 it has been located in the restored house of the Levitskiy’s family, near which a monument to the writer was erected in 1968 (sculptor Halyna Kalchenko). Since 1994 the Museum is a branch of the Korsun-Shevchenkivskiy State Historical and Cultural Preserve.
The modern exposition of the Museum was created in 1988 (author – Serhiy Khavrus, director of the museum in 1968–2014;
decoration by the Kyiv artists Shatilovs). It tells about the life and creative path of the Ukrainian writer I.S. Nechuy-Levytskiy. Approximately 900 exhibits are presented in five halls, most of which are memorial items. In the first hall there are icons, clocks, furniture that belonged to the Levitskiy’s family, a painting “On the Fishing”, which, according to the writer’s grand-niece of the Vira Levitska, was painted by I.S. Nechuy-Levitskiy.
The second hall presents ethnographic materials that recreate the life of the Stebliv’s inhabitants, in the third one materials about the youth of the writer. The further life of I.S. Nechuy-Levytskiy is shown in the fourth hall, where his personal belongings are presented. Here the interior of the writer’s Kyiv apartment is recreated on the basis of memorial items, in particular, a desk and a grand piano belonging to Ivan Semenovych are exhibited. In the last hall there are paintings, drawings, panels etc. on the subject of the works by I.S. Nechuy-Levytskiy, editions of the writer’s works of different years.
